A poster quote is easier to compare when the size, viewing distance, placement, material, quantity and deadline are explicit. Use this checklist to judge a print shop for your use, not simply by its headline price. Standardize sheet proportions against the ISO 216 paper size standard, and export final layout geometry following Adobe InDesign print-ready PDF guidelines.

Define where the poster will be seen

Start with the location and the time a viewer has to notice the poster. A notice on a wall at arm’s length needs different text and image detail from a large display viewed across a room. Choose the finished dimensions around the available space and the viewing distance.

Write the purpose in one sentence. A store promotion, event notice and internal instruction poster each need a different information hierarchy. Keep the headline, date or offer and action easy to scan, then choose a format that supports those priorities.

Compare material and finish for the location

Ask which paper or other approved substrate suits the planned display. Indoor use, repeated handling, display lighting and exposure to moisture can affect the choice. Do not assume a glossy finish is always better; glare can make a poster harder to read under bright lights.

If the poster will be displayed outdoors or in a high-contact area, describe those conditions to the printer and ask which material and finishing options are available. A paper stock intended for indoor use may not suit weather exposure or repeated handling.

Request the exact material, weight or thickness, surface finish and any mounting or lamination assumptions in the quote. Our poster printing service page is the starting point for discussing formats and print requirements.

Check the artwork at final print size

Review the file at its finished dimensions. Resolution depends on the original image, print size and viewing distance; enlarging a small raster image cannot restore detail that is not in the file. Adobe notes that 300 pixels per inch suits close-viewed high-quality prints, while large-format work viewed from farther away can use lower resolution.

Use vector artwork for logos and crisp line graphics where possible. Check contrast, spelling, dates, addresses and QR codes. Keep critical text within the printer’s safe area and supply bleed only in the dimensions the provider requests.

Ask whether the supplier provides an artwork check or proof. Review a proof for cropping, alignment, colour direction and small text before approval. A screen preview helps with layout but cannot guarantee how every substrate or light source will affect colour.

Compare the quote, proof and delivery plan

Send the same job specification to each shop: dimensions, quantity, material, finish, artwork format, proof requirement, packing and delivery location. Ask for a written quote that names these details so you can compare like with like.

Check whether the price includes artwork correction, proofing, mounting, packing or delivery. If you need multiple designs, state the number of versions and copies for each version. A single total without those details is difficult to evaluate.

Confirm the dispatch date and delivery method against your installation or event date. If timing is critical, ask the shop to confirm the production schedule before payment or final approval. For a local quote, share the poster brief with Sarkar Printer.

Frequently asked questions

What should I compare when choosing a poster print shop?

Compare the finished dimensions, material, finish, artwork checks, proofing, quantity, packing and delivery. Ask each shop to quote the same specification.

Does every poster need 300 ppi artwork?

Not in every case. Resolution depends on print size and viewing distance. Adobe describes 300 ppi as ideal for smaller prints viewed closely; large-format work viewed from farther away can use lower resolution.

Should I choose glossy or matte poster paper?

Choose based on the display lighting, desired appearance and intended use. Gloss can add shine but may create glare; ask the printer about available finishes.

Can a print shop check my poster file?

Some providers offer artwork checks or proofs. Confirm what they check and whether corrections are included before you send the final file.
